We Painted the Front Door! DIY Tips + Tricks

Two years in our home  . . . and we painted the front door! It only took 30 days, a bunch of emails bugging the HOA, and a gallon of paint. Here's how we did it!

Materials Needed:

Paintwe did Tricorn Black in Satin by Sherwin Williams

Paint sprayer or roller: we went the sprayer route for a more even finish!

Tape: blue tape isn't the best, I've heard great things about FROG tape! But ours worked fine for the job

Plastic and paper for taping off and covering up areas

Here's what the door looked like BEFORE

QUICK STEPS TO PAINT YOUR DOOR:
1. If you choose to remove the door fully (we kept ours on), take off and clean door or sand it! We skipped the sanding and just wiped down the doors. Probably should have really scrubbed it, but we just went for it!

2. After cleaning and taping off area, use paint sprayer or roller to apply first coat. If using paint sprayer, spray 6-10 inches away in an even form.

3. LET FULLY DRY. This is very important before another coat is added! If the door feels sticky or still looks wet, don't touch it!

Here are the photos during the process. If you look at these pics below you can see the sprayer had major overspray, so we have both our interior white paint and exterior tan paint to cover up that! Be prepared for a little bit of a mess!

Here are the AFTER photos!
I loved how it turned out. I'm also glad we decided to paint the trim around the door instead of leaving it white.

I'm not sure if we need new hardware, since the all-black does look a litttttttle dark. Any suggestions? Let me know in a comment!
